There is something to say about a man overcoming adversities and returning to something that he knows so well. Chris Brown is such a man. After the whole drama he endured, he comes back with a strong album. The tunes are catchy and sublime. He has a plethora of melody, rhythm, and beats that keeps the listener tuned. After the whole drama he endured, he comes back with a strong album. The tunes are catchy and sublime. He has a plethora of melody, rhythm, and beats that keeps the listener tuned. The song "Brown Skin Girl (feat. Sean Paul)" is especially surprising coming from him. It has a distinct island flavor feel that we have never seen from Chris. "I Love U" is very catchy and could become a radio hit. It has the club feel but is not too techno-driven. "I'll Go" is a good ballad but not powerful enough to elicit a response. It terms of overall album Chris does deliver. That being said there is still much he can improve on. I still hear the same Chris Brown that I've heard since he came out. While he has matured in many ways, his album needs to reflect that maturity.

Chris Brown started work on Graffiti in 2008, but the album’s course changed — along with everything else in his life — in February 2009, when Brown’s physical attack on Rihanna ignited a media firestorm that threatened to derail his career. The excellent “I Can Transform Ya,” “What I Do” and “Wait” exemplify Brown’s talent for futuristic, club-oriented R&B, and show what the album would have looked like had the Rihanna incident never happened. Regardless, the most crucial songs on Graffiti are those that address the assault. In “Crawl,” “So Cold,” “Famous Girl” and “Fallin’ Down” Brown speaks directly to Rihanna, and to his credit, he manages to express anguish, regret, and affection in a way that he hadn’t been able to in interviews. The closing song, “Gotta Be Ur Man,” is overbearing and desperate, and Graffiti is better ended with “I’ll Go,” which strikes the proper tone of acceptance and love: “If I don't come back, girl your love was worth it, that's the one thing I know / And if I don't make it back, girl remember that I said I'd go.”

Graffiti Tchno

For years, this enigmatic and “criminal” expression of art was misunderstood and loathed. However, despite the misinterpretations, graffiti continued to flow over city to city, train to train, and eventually spilled into American suburbs, rich neighborhoods, and overseas. The artful rebellion was about raw emotion, determination, and creative fortitude. Not only did these creatures of the night have to sneak their masterpiece on various forms of public viewed property, but it was heavily frowned upon and a crime punishable by law. Still, the colors floated via train from one side of the city to the other; contaminating various eyes with a mysterious beauty never seen before by many. As the trains traveled, so did the tales of many neighborhoods, as well as their languages, names, pride, and souls.

As the 70′s brushed by, graffiti continued to be the art of choice in many urban settings. Eventually adopting it as one of its four elements, Hip Hop became the soundtrack to the effervescent force known as graffiti, and much like its musical counterpart, it has dazzled and pulsated through the streets to this very day.

Glow of the Krylon

People around the world have always been intrigued by ancient scribbles birthed from hands of Egyptians, Romans, Native Americans, and other ancient cultures. Stories, memorials, and primordial signatures plastered on rock walls and cave dwellings have kept archaeologists and historians busy for centuries, as they attempt to crack archaic codes embedded within pictures disclosing the history of our earliest generations on Earth. Even long after the progression of man, there remained a form of inscription that expressed the stories of an entire generation.

Splattered upon city structures, subway trains, brick walls, and tunnels are words and symbols covered in a rainbow’s urination; Graffiti. A constant mobile urban storybook that is told through the hands of metropolitan Van Gogh’s. An intense dare devil art form that was born in the City of Brotherly Love in 1967, and (supposedly) simultaneously in the womb of hip hop, New York.

Hip Hop’s most beautiful element first sprayed onto the scene in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With touted names such as Cornbread and Top Cat leading the scene, these cheese steak stuffed artists threw up burners all across their city, with their number one goal being to cover the largest and most popular structures so their tags could be recognized by the masses and noticed by their rivals. The krylon scepter was eventually passed onto the kings of New York, where subway train tagging exploded and became one of the most popular targets for writers around the city.

For some reason, society accepts corporations print marketing on a massive scale all over it’s cities. It would seem if you have money you can not only put up your own visual ideas but do it in neon, put up floodlights, cameras, build parking lots, saturate television, print, web anything you want.

Go to any city street anywhere and you are instantly greated with a sea of brand x and brand y’s visual print media marketing campaigns, everyone of them employing psychological techniques specifically intended to play on human emotions so as to increase company sales. The streets are a wash with impact colors action slogans, power messages, neon lights, leds, digital signage and all manor of visual noise.

And it seems there isn’t really much of a gap between what the advertiser’s wants to say and the collective society, sure there are organizations in place to supposedly police the nature of the content but they would be faced with multi-million dollar advertising spends not to mention the amount of information that they would have to shift through.

An example of a society backlash against the mass marketing machine was in early 2000's when people discovered that the Ipod came with a nonuser replaceable battery and the only way to replace it was to buy a whole new device. There was a massive public reaction. I remember seeing defaced posters as it was the publics way of getting a message back to the corporation (or other people in the community) via the companies own marketing material. As the company itself was far away people reacted against the only thing that was available– the posters.
